Atropa's enchanting scissors were responsible for severing the threads of life–an appropriate tribute for such a toxic plant. Deadly nightshade has also been associated with Hecate, the Greek goddess of witches and the night. The name "belladonna," Italian for "beautiful woman," originates from the Victorian use of the drops of deadly nightshade to dilate women's pupils.
