This is because many of them tolerate some degree of shade, like jade (Crassula spp.), Haworthia and Gasteria. As succulents, they also tolerate neglect very well, and are able to go for a long time without water. Please note, these plants will not survive a hard frost and should be grown as indoor plants in all but the highest hardiness zones.
